Tony-winning 'American Idiot' comes to O.C.
"American Idiot," the Tony-winning musical based on Green Day's 2004 album, opened Tuesday at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The Register was there to capture the action.
"American Idiot" director Michael Mayer, best known for his Tony-winning rock musical "Spring Awakening," began to think about the dramatic possibilities of "American Idiot" soon after hearing the album for the first time.
"I started to imagine what kind of story could (emanate) from these songs. I could see something about kids leaving the suburbs and going to the city, someone messing up and hitting rock bottom before coming back to himself again. It had some resonance for me; it started to feel like a dramatic story."
