Awareness and Funding for Stand Up To Cancer

ORANGECOUNTY.COM

A little bit of thunder rolling in the skies, and a brief down pour from the clouds above, didn’t stop hundreds of runners from giving their muddy-all at a 5k obstacle course known as the Reality Irvine Lake Mud run on Saturday. Joined by dozens of reality stars from shows like Amazing Race, Big Brother, and Survivor – these adrenaline seeking runners got down and dirty to not only challenge themselves but to also help the cause Stand Up To Cancer.

Each Irvine Lake Mud Run has a benefactor. At the Sept. 10 event, the focus was to raise awareness of and funding for the efforts of Stand Up To Cancer. The non-profit organization dedicates itself to supporting ground-breaking research and bringing new treatments to patients as quickly as possible.

During the first hour of waves, several reality celebrities gave words of encouragement to the runners before each start and told personal stories of what brought them out to the cause and obstacle course.

Then with the sound of a blow horn, repeat offenders or first timers took off, plummeting first down a long dirt hill. Broken up by an open track along the scenic lake, runners then drudged through mud pools, bear-crawled under cargo nets, hurled over jump walls, climbed over wooden ramps, and slid down a huge water slide before claiming their win at the finish line.

Those who want to participate in the next Irvine Lake Mud Run madness will have to wait till next year for the new season of challenges. Deemed “Spring Break at the Lake”, the next mid run will take place on March 31, 2012. The Saturday event will include a “dirty dodgeball” game and benefit the Gavin R. Stevens Foundation to find a cure for the eye disease Lebers Congenital Amaurosis.
