Visual Merchandising Trends at The Closet

IMAGES AND WORDS BY TOSH TOSH / ORANGECOUNTY.COM

The Closet's knack for blending high fashion, streetwear and beachwear together, have made them a go to store for the style conscious in Orange County.  It's not often you find brands like Volcom, Audrey, Ellison Apparel, Jachs and LRG all under the same roof.  While the economy has hit The Closet hard forcing them to close a few stores, the Costa Mesa branch is still going strong and trying hard to capture and inspire fashion.  Their recent window displays do just this with bright graphic stickers on the windows framing the mannequins with in.  The extra large window stickers have been a big trend for visual merchandising with in the last few years.  What started with Dior Homme, when Hedi Slimane was still part of the design house, has now become a regular part of Visual Merchandising.  When Hedi Slimane designed for Dior Homme, he also changed their window displays, and for many seasons there were just large black and white images of skinny young men, covering majority of the windows.  At that time everyone else was sticking to the traditional equation for a window display, meaning mannequins and decorations.  But… slowly other brands started following suit with these sticker mannequins were finally accepted as new way or displaying apparel.
Volcom has a big presence in the window right now that coincides with their “What happened to Melody Malone” campaign.  Girls can complete the Melody Malone True Hollywood-esqe story at volcom.com/girls to win prizes and clothing packages. The big sticker mannequins display young women and use bright colors that attract the passerby's eye.  Purple, the main color of the windows, is one of the big trends being pushed. Purple has been a strong color in the last few months and promises to continue to do as well in the colder seasons.   Key accessories being pushed were black ankle boots, stacked bangles and gold chain necklaces.  The trendy black leggings with cutouts and the black leather jacket are also promising key trends.
For men The Closet shows that checks and plaids will continue to be strong prints and jeans will continue to lean on the tight side.  For the winter season dark shades of color will be more popular, with gray or black jeans replacing the raw denim colors.
Go take a look at The Closet see what's behind their windows and sticker mannequins.
