Better than basic: This black dress, velvety like the darkest night, might not have been classic when American painter John Singer Sargent painted his 1884 "Portrait of Madame X", but the portrait of socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau certainly became one. Launching my personal obsession with dark clothing.

Basic black: Celebrities love it

Fashion celebrities love to wear black

As far as I'm concerned all other colors of clothing can  take a back seat to black. (My friend Alan and the editor of this here blog will disagree but well, she's wrong.)

It's my go to. My fall back. My safety. When I walk into my stuffed closet and stare like a drooling idiot, flummoxed by the myriad choices and panic, thinking "I have nothing to wear. I have nothing to wear. I have nothing to wear". I take a deep breath think "Black".  I know if  I just throw on black --  a dress, skirt and top, trousers and jacket, skinnies and heels, doesn't matter  -- it will all be alright.

Thus it falls under the category of  "Indispensable".

There is a reason they call it BASIC black - - because it is so classic, so accessible, so utterly timeless you can never go wrong wearing it.

Ever.
