OC Fair's 'Home Sweet Home' opens today
OC Fair gates open for 'Home Sweet Home'
It has finally arrived.
The OC Fair "Home Sweet Home" opened at noon Friday and thousands are expected to be lined up for the first hour of free parking and admission to celebrate opening day.
"Home Sweet Home" runs until Aug. 12. It will offer creative cuisine, interaction with animals, art displays, entertainment, carnival rides and contests.
Beyond indulging in fried fare and riding rides here are some ideas for day one of the fair that are free with general admission:
- Market goat judging will take place at noon at the livestock area
- Ants on a Log Contest at 2 p.m. and is open to children and their families in building at the Camp Fun Zone.
- The All-Alaskan Racing Pigs race every two hours from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pig Races arena near the livestock area.
- Chef Renee Fontes will hold a culinary demo at 5 p.m. in the Exhibit Promenade.
- A Knott's pie-eating contest will be held at 7 p.m. in the Exhibit Promenade.
- Salute to Heroes Tribute Show, which includes fireworks and a laser show will be at 8:20 p.m. at the Hangar.

And here is some other useful information for day one at the fair:
Admission: Free admission opening day from noon to 1 p.m. After that it's $11 general admission, $8 for seniors and $6 for children ages 6-12. Children under age 5 are free.
Deals: $2 rides, $2 food tastings and $2 for seniors.
Hours: Noon to midnight.
Parking: Free parking opening day until 1 p.m. After that it's $7 per vehicle, $14 per bus.

Sunday: Fair Square will get "bombed" with colorful yarn from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to participate.
July 26-28: Pogopalooza will invite fairgoers to set a pogo stick record in Fair Square.
July 27: The Girl Scouts will celebrate their 100th anniversary with performances and demonstrations. A daily exhibit honoring the Girl Scouts is also on display.
July 28: Ultimate Dodgeball Championships is new at the Action Sports Arena this year.
Aug. 1-12: The Oasis Camel Dairy will be at the fairgrounds to showcase these animals, including daily milking demonstrations.
Aug. 1-12: The Budweiser Clydesdales will be on display in the livestock area of the Fair.
Aug. 10: Damsels of Destruction Demolition Derby. An all-female demolition derby is new this year at the Fair.
