North Shore Winter: Vans World Cup of Surfing, Sunset Beach - First Day of Competition

Tuesday was the first day of competition of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, and a great day for the two Orange County surfers that competed in the round of 128. Chris Ward, (Wardo) and Timmy Reyes both advanced to the round of 96.

Chris Ward of San Clemente was the first OC surfer to hit the water this morning in stormy 5-foot to 7-foot surf. Ward stayed busy building his score in the challenging Sunset surf. Wardo sat on the outside west peak and grabbed just about every wave that came through in that section of Sunset Beach, and went on to win his first round heat.

The very next heat Huntington Beach's Timmy Reyes was in the line-up. Reyes led most of the heat and looked as if he also would pull off a win, but in the closing minutes Nathan Hedge of Australia pulled into a bombing outside set wave and ran it through the 20-foot deep inside section known as Velzy's Reef for a heat winning score of 6.67 moving Reyes to second.

Looks like we will be waiting for the weekend for the second day of competition as this swell only hung around for the day with the next sizable swell hitting on Friday, Nov. 30, night.
