DeBarge drug charges dropped
Aging pop star has history of drug use
Eldra (El) DeBarge claims the police screwed up royally when they arrested him for drug possession this week.
Spencer Vodnoy, a lawyer for the DeBarge family, told TMZ, “The family said they were relieved to hear that no charges will be filed against El. At the end of the day the truth appears to have prevailed and I am sure he will be getting back to work on his career, his health and happiness.”
Career? What career? You’d have to be a 1980s dance club regular to recall the group’s biggest hits. “The Rhythm of the Night” topped the charts in 1985, when Reagan was just beginning his second term.
And you can’t blame the cops for being suspicious. El is an admitted addict who has been arrested four times since 2001 on drug-related charges. He was sentenced to two years in prison in 2008 for possession of crack and drug paraphernalia.
El was arrested on Tuesday in Los Angeles on suspicion of coke possession with intent to sell. Officials subsequently dropped the charges because there was not enough evidence to prove the singer did anything wrong.
