California / Hawaii inspirations at the Future Heretics Fashion Show

IMAGES AND WORDS BY TOSH TOSH / ORANGECOUNTY.COM

Orange County just recently had its fashion week, and now LA is having theirs.  I had a chance to check out Future Heretics fashion show, which was a nice take on urban streetwear.  The two designers Bryden Lando and Alex Kosters created a unique aesthetic from Hawaii and California inspirations in the 80's and 90's.  Japan was another big influence evident in the denim washes, unique styling and blends of materials.
The name Future Heretics derives from the Greek word, hairetikos, which means  ‘able to choose’ www.futureheretics.com.  The brand aims to promote fashion and art together and the artist behind both aspects.  Bryden, who has previously worked with Volcom and held a few of his own art shows, is originally from Maui.  His art is a mix of city and beach with integrating elements like a skull representing a sun on the horizon.  Alex, who also has a history in fashion, is very familiar with denim and the evidence of this is in there Spring 2010 collection.
While much of the looks they sent down the runway, are too fashion forward for majority of the general public, their individual elements work.  The denim washes are innovative and hit a range of rarely tapped colors.  The exposed zip skirts and motorcycle jackets were right on trend.  And "The White Man Is The Devil" shirt made a loud interesting statement.
