Photos: Road Trip Newport & Rincon
"Frothing" a surfing term meaning to "froth, get stoked on, to over power, get yours" In a sentence, " Dude this swell had everyone frothing!"
We all where "frothing", on the coming of this NNW swell. At 285 degrees we all held out hope that it wasn't to steep for Orange County to hit. As morning came and the dawn patrol started to report in, the mood was going from froth to lost to road trip!
Calls, started coming in from the guys, Keetin Devine," Seal not looking to good, kind of funky bumps in the water, high tide is killing it.", Matt Taylor, "Pier looks big but walled, not to many corners.", Miles Smith, "Yeah, I hear it sucks in Newport except for Blackies, I'm heading over there now.", Teddy Navarro, "I've been checking for the last hour, nothing looks good, but Blackies and 28th, I'm heading over after I check 61st with Ryan Simmons." and you get the picture. With Blackies the only OC place hitting off I went to shoot.
I caught the hardest working local pro in Orange County, Teddy Navarro with Richie Collins, Jarred Cassady, and the new grom from Florida that just moved to Newport and a few others killing it at 28th. When the call came in the road trip to Ventura's Rincon was on! Off to the house to gear up, calls coming in from Teddy Navarro, Alex Gullett, Kyle McGeary, and Evan Kane all in which where heading out on this video and photo shoot.
As we pull into Rincon, "Frothing", at the chance to catch it on a perfect low tide suck out, we run into what you would have thought was an OC parking lot. Christian Saenz, Taylor Pai, AJ Collins, Kanoa Igarashi, and in the water is Ryan Simmons, nice!
That's when the "froth" turned to "skunk", Gullett gets jumped on on his first ride by a local, McGeary gets jumped on on his second wave by a local, and Evan Kane, one of the quietest kids you'll ever be around get's jumped on while he's on a wave, but the local jumped from behind the wave not even in it onto Evan, and the swell didn't really hit Rincon that much anyways. With heavy vibes and a crappy wave, we headed back to the safety of Orange County to surf another day. Come to think of it the waves weren't so bad down here.
