Olympics get a royal boost
William and Kate host Olympics party
What ever happened to British humility?
Prince William and Kate Middleton attended “Our Greatest Team Rises,” an event in London on Friday to celebrate the Summer Olympics, which will open there a mere 77 days from now.
The Brits have a right to talk a little smack: they came in fourth among nations four years ago in China. Their 47-medal tally included 19 gold medallions.
The 3,000 guests included 67 British Olympic athletes. The Prince showed that he, at least, remains humble about his abilities.
“Naturally, I was asked to compete for Team GB in every sport, but sadly, Lord Coe said there were London pigeons with more athletic prowess than me,” he cracked.
Then the prince got serious – and puffed the royal chest a little.
“For the athletes of Our Greatest Team, these Games mark the pinnacle of your sporting careers. I can only imagine it ... competing at home, in front of your countrymen and women, with the eyes of the entire world upon you. A dream come true.”
