San Juan getting saddled up for Rodeo Week


San Juan Capistrano and Rancho Mission Viejo will present their first Rodeo Week this year, a series of events planned during the week before the Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo on Aug. 25-26.

Officials will detail the plans Friday at a media preview, but here's the preliminary schedule:

Aug. 18: Kickoff country barbecue, Historic Town Center Park, 31806 El Camino Real

Aug. 19: Cowboys & Chrome car show, with live music, San Juan Hills Golf Club, 32120 San Juan Creek Road

Aug. 20: West Coast Film Festival ("The Searchers")

Aug. 21: Tequila tasting, El Adobe de Capistrano, 31891 Camino Capistrano

Aug. 22: Cowboy music and poetry with Rusty Richards, Camino Real Playhouse, 31776 El Camino Real

Aug. 23: Western art in Los Rios and West Coast Film Festival ("The Wild Bunch")

Aug. 24: ZooFest at Zoomars Petting Zoo, 31791 Los Rios St.

The annual Rancho Mission Viejo Rodeo is the richest two-day rodeo in the nation, with a purse totaling more than $200,000. It features saddle bronc and bareback riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bull riding and team roping at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at Ortega Highway and La Pata Avenue.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children ages 4-12 and free for ages 3 and under. Sales will begin Wednesday at Swallow's Inn, 31786 Camino Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano; Hennessey's Tavern, 34111 La Plaza, Dana Point; Boot Barn, 23762 Mercury Road, Lake Forest; and Ortega Tack & Feed, 31738 Rancho Viejo Road, San Juan Capistrano.
