Tips for returning those holiday gifts

THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Are you returning holiday gifts today?

Maybe you've gained or shed a few pounds and that lime-green and orange sweater your mom sent you doesn't fit anymore. And, let's face it, it was always ugly.

Here are some tips for easier returns:

  • Have everything if possible in the original packaging.
  • Bring the receipt, if you have one. Hope your giver gave you a gift receipt! Some stores won't take things back at all without a receipt. And your odds of scamming a store by bringing something back that wasn't purchased there are lower now, because many stores have software that can tell if an item came from there.
  • Be aware that you can usually bring a gift purchased online to the brick-and-mortar store without additional charge, if the retailer has one. This is one reason I like to shop online at retailers with real stores.
  • If the item is defective and it was purchased online, contact the retailer and ask them to send you a prepaid mailing label to ship it back. Sometimes they can even email it to you. Then, you just drop it off at the shipper.
  • Try to go stand in the return line at odd times. And, if you have to go when it's crowded, be zen about it and give yourself something to do in line like reading your email or balancing your checkbook. Then, be nice to the clerk. He or she didn't make the line.

And enjoy your day!
