Twenty inner-city high school students were given a lesson in stoke.

Nike 6.0 showed a group of at-risk students a whole different world, giving them a six-part series of surf sessions fused with creative workshops at the Motel NoTell in San Clemente.

The crew at Stoked Mentoring combines action sports with the power of mentoring and a supportive community during a three week long program. The 6.0 Days of Stoked’ness concluded Aug. 29, with a graduation BBQ for twenty inner-city Los Angeles high school students, age 14-18.

“Bringing the Stoked LA crew down to The Motel NoTell and beautiful San Clemente beaches, offered a chance for the Stoked experience to be heightened. Of course, it was great to see the kids ride waves on the 3 Saturdays, but my favorite part was really the Tuesday workshops. Seeing kids paint canvases and sublimate custom Ts with Madsteez, design shoes with Surfer magazine’s art director, and learn about photography with the best in the biz was something truly special to be able to help deliver to their experience. ” Said Zach Boon, Nike 6.0 Associate Brand Manger.

The six-day curriculum included three Saturday sessions of surfing coupled with an on-land lesson such as learning yoga for health or raising environmental awareness through beach clean up. In the water, participating students were paired one-to one with a mentor, including professional surfers Veronica Kay and Daize Goodwin. Tuesday evening sessions centered around creative workshops, hosted by Surfer Magazine, which introduced the Stoked students to creativity as a life skill. Michael Noe, art director for Surfer Magazine, discussed how art, design, and surfing have guided his life and lead NIKE iD customization sessions. For the final Tuesday evening, top surf-industry photographers took the group to beautiful Trestles to document the natural landscape in the midst of the toll-road controversy.

“It has been an absolute pleasure working with Nike 6.0 and the Motel No Tell crew! Stoked LA’s surf program completely exceeded all expectations. Surfing new beaches, becoming part of a larger surf community, and all of the amazing workshops gave our kids a unique opportunity to explore themselves in the greater context of the action sports lifestyle. Our teens, mentors and volunteers were all blown away by this incredible experience.” Said Phoebe Brauer, Program Manager Stoked Mentoring, Los Angeles.

6.0 Days of Stoked’ness concluded on Saturday, Aug 29th with a lesson on the history of surfing in CA, hosted by the Surfing Heritage Foundation and a graduation BBQ at the Motel NoTell with all students, mentors, and volunteers present. Each student received an action sports starter pack, a pair of custom designed NIKE iD shoes and will continue communication with their assigned mentors, who volunteer for one year minimum.
