Newport to Ensenada yacht race sets sail
NEWPORT BEACH – The wind was up and large swells were rolling as dozens of sailboats vied for a place at the starting line for the 65th annual Newport to Ensenada yacht race on Friday.
White sails filled in the horizon and the boats circled lazily as they waited for the horn to sound and the race to begin. Racers in the first class took off just after 11 a.m. on the 125-mile journey south that will end with a lot of celebration and even more tequila at the marina at Hotel Coral.
Starts will continue every 10 minutes near the Balboa pier ending after 1 p.m. until all 218 boats are on their way. Eighteen classes of boats will participate in the event that is said to be the largest and oldest yacht race in the world.
