Contest winner will sing at Ducks game
Four finalists of the Orange County Register and Anaheim Ducks "Oh, Say Can You Sing" contest converged Tuesday at the Honda Center in Anaheim for a "sing-off."
The winner will sing the National Anthem at the Anaheim Ducks Fan Appreciation game on April 1.
The finalists, Kari Yeager, 28, of Aliso Viejo, Nicole Garrison, 30, of Huntington Beach, Delaney Bell, 17 of Newport Beach and Josiah Smith, 18 of Yorba Linda nervously awaited their turn. Each walked out on a carpeted path on the hockey ice to sing before a panel of Anaheim Ducks and Register judges.
Each finalist belted out the National Anthem like a seasoned professional and could have easily been picked the winner. But, it was Josiah Smith from Yorba Linda who squeaked out the win.
Josiah impressed the judges with his pure rendition of the anthem.
"I knew I was the only male to sing today, so I was nervous and excited," Josiah said. "I'm thrilled to get this opportunity. I enjoy singing (the Anthem) pure, in a way that the crowd will want to join in and sing it too."
Josiah will also receive an Anaheim Ducks signed jersey and hockey stick and two tickets for the night's game to see the Anaheim Ducks play against the Edmonton Oilers. Josiah plans to take his mom Angelina Smith to watch him sing and enjoy the game.
"I'm very proud," said Angelina enthusiastically. "He still makes me want to cry when he sings."
In all, 58 video entries were received into the 2012 "Oh, Say You Can Sing" contest. Finalists were determined from the most online votes and judge's picks combined.
