Boardshort Trends at The Hurley Pro

Color Blocking, Neon, Plaid, Brown...

Hurley Pro Trestles 2009, happened this weekend at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.  The contest is the sixth WTC event and brings some of the worlds top surfers to the California shores.  This year Mick Fanning won by beating Kelly Slater in the semi-finals and Dane Reynolds in the finals. The day was beautiful and the beach was packed, so I went on spy mode for trends.

Boardshorts, the staple uniform for men at the beach, came in all sorts of styles, colors and cuts.  To make things comprehensible I put together some of my spy shots to show just what was going on at Trestles Saturday.

*Color blocking on boardshorts has been a domineering trend in the last few seasons and it still seems to be going strong.  Straight up squares or a collage of geometric shapes work well as a base for color blocking.

*Brown color boardshorts were another trend at the event.  Using a brown base with accent colors and designs on top made for some interesting boardshorts that were casual and stylish at the same time.

*The color fade shorts have been around for a while but it wasn't until last summer with the circle pattern rainbow-fade trunks, by quicksilver, that it really took off.  At Trestles we saw the original fades and this seasons versions with small checks and all over graphics.

*Neon 80's are still going strong with bright and loud boardshorts.  Look for florescent yellow, neon blue and bright pink all on one pair of shorts.

*While the pictures were few, old school boardshorts are making it big.  A bit shorter, a rounded hem, these trunks are killing it and can be stylish with out all the graphics and color combos.  For the classic guy out there, plaids seem to be the never failing print.

*Boardshorts in plaid were found galore at the Hurley Pro.  Whether it be a traditional plaid or a graphic play on the print, the traditional style is a safe bet for the beach.

*The anit-boardshorters wore a mix of cargos, khakis and jeans.  I loves the cut denim shorts and the jeans rolled-up at the cuff.  It may be hot for the beach but it sure looks good.

*Stripes, like plaids, seam to be one of those things that will never go away.  You never knew there were so many ways to do stripes, but there are and if you like you can find hundreds of boardshorts that show it.  Whether it be stripes in a small detail of the graphics of an all over stripe, there's no denying it, stripes are everywhere.

*If anything goes with the beach design wise, it's the tropical trend.  Palm trees, tropical flowers and sunset hues…  There is the peaceful purples, blues and pinks blended together or the louder yellows and oranges mixed with bold black and white.  Both tropical and both totally different and good.
