Review: Fresh Sushi Cafe in Anaheim Hills
Living up to its name
The name may lack originality and its location may be unassuming but Fresh Sushi Cafe in Anaheim Hills delivers exactly that: fresh sushi. Tucked away in the Anaheim Hills Festival Center next to Bagel Me! and Daphne's Greek Cafe, Fresh Sushi is great as a lunch spot after shopping or just to drop in for dinner. Upon arriving, you are immediately greeted by a large banner outside of the entrance boasting 20 different kinds of fresh and baked rolls the place has to offer all for $5.95 each!
The restaurant itself is relatively small with a reasonably sized outdoor patio, bar, an assortment of tables and even two spots where you can enjoy your sushi traditionally seated on the floor. The inside decor is nicely done given the amount of space with a large Japanese fan in one corner next to a flat screen television, a large fish in another and a fully shelved wall with vases, smaller fans and other Japanese knick-knacks to give it a bit of sophisticated flair.
As you enter the chefs behind the bar immediately acknowledge your presence and give a shout "Hello!" The waitstaff is friendly and very quick, perhaps a little too quick as before I even had a chance to get a good look at the menu I was asked twice if I was ready to order. Upon perusing their menus (they gave me 3 different ones) their specialties appear to be rolls, majority of them listed on that large banner placed outside. You have your traditional California and Spicy Tuna Rolls plus a variety that includes a Mango roll (California roll with mango on top) and Garlic baked rolls. However, they do provide some interesting selections such as the Victoria's Pleasure (which includes crab meat, shrimp and avocado without the rice and wrapped in soy paper) for around $12.95. Fret not, if you prefer to stick with just sushi, a limited selection is available for under $3 per two pieces.
Even as the restaurant was starting to crowd, the chefs were speedy and everyone, including my party received our orders no more than 10 minutes after ordering. The rolls we got were fairly big and the fish was perfectly fresh & tasty; overall the taste, combined with the quick service and affordability, we left here extremely satisfied. This definitely isn't the place if you are looking for fancy sushi and sashimi but if you just want to grab some quick affordable rolls with friends or family then Fresh Sushi Cafe will be right up your alley.
