Surprise swell Wednesday with a touch of red tide

A lot of us were caught off guard when this pulse of swell hit this morning in the 2' to 3' foot range during high tide. As I tried to rally the troops to get out of bed and head to Newport, not many thought there was any waves and told me, "No way, it's flat, it's high tide, it's red tide, over it ... going back to bed."
But there were a few who took to the line up and scored. Though the red tide did come in heavy, if you put the ear plugs in and didn't drink the water, you too would have scored. Teddy Navarro, Tyler Gunter, Spencer Pirdy and Christian Saenz all hit and scored before the pulse died down around 10 a.m.
There's always this evening - just don't drink the water!
