Blackball season coming up – is board ban fair?
It's that time of year again, when the boards gotta get out of the water at the Wedge for most of the day.
Blackball season is once again upon us, and the first spot along the coast that always hits first is the Wedge. Bodysurfers love this time of year – cause it means they're less likely to get nailed during these hours – and got together for a celebration on May 1.
A few snaps from bodysurfers Kevin Mel Thoman:
Boards have to be out of the water between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. through summer, up until Oct. 31. It's always a hot topic – especially on those good days when the guys don't want to get out of the water.
The Wedge is an expert-only break, so use caution if you plan on taking it on this year.
The yellow flag with a black dot in the center that can be seen flying at several Southern California beaches throughout the summer months is about to be put away until the middle of next year.
Blackball is always a big bummer for surfers – especially when the waves are going off – and typically starts at beaches starting mid June and runs through the first of September. Often times during Spring Break when the crowds are heavy you'll even see the flag at various surf spots throughout the Southland.
