O.C. surfers shine at Vans World Cup of Surfing
The second stop of the Vans Triple Crown was jam-packed with action, especially as a few local surfers stood out among the world's best as they took on Sunset Beach on the North Shore.
The Vans World Cup of Surfing wrapped up earlier this week, with Australia's Adam Melling taking home the win.
There were a couple shocker exits early on the final day, as 11-time world champ Kelly Slater and reigning Triple Crown winner John John Florence were knocked out of the event in the round of 32. Unfortunately, a few local surfers had to also say goodbye during that round, with San Clemente's Tanner Gudauskas and Chris Ward also eliminated.
But Huntington Beach's Brett Simpson and San Clemente's Nate Yeomans had a great showing, making it to the quarterfinals. The result pretty much solidified Simpson's spot in next year's World Tour, made up of the best 32 surfers in the world.
The Billabong Pipe Masters – the final stop of the Triple Crown – is coming up next. The waiting period for the final stop of the ASP World Tour starts Dec. 8 and runs through Dec. 20, with the event running the best three or four days. Watch it live at vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com.
