Zooey goes country on Broadway
Deschanel to be 'Coal Miner's Daughter'
Is there anything Zooey Deschanel can’t do?
The indie “it” girl, star and producer of the sitcom “New Girl” and singer-songwriter isn’t content with just three (or is that five?) careers. She will play country music legend Loretta Lynn in a Broadway adaptation of the film “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”
Lynn made the announcement after introducing and singing with Deschanel during a Thursday night appearance at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
“There’s a little girl backstage that’s going to do the play of ‘Coal Miner's Daughter’ on Broadway,” Lynn told the crowd. “Zooey, where you at, honey?”
Deschanel, 32, emerged in a short, vintage-looking white dress.
“Are you going to help me sing ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’?” asked Lynn.
“I’m going to help you sing,” said Deschanel, who has been nominated for a Grammy Award. “This is a great honor for me. This is my hero.”
The two traded verses and ended the song holding hands.
“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City,” Lynn said in a statement. “I never imagined I’d see ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see.”
“I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great – she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”
