Cold case solved: McDermott's mother murdered
Cold case: McDermott's mother murdered
Police in Connecticut have concluded that actor Dylan McDermott’s mother was killed in 1967 by a gangster, her boyfriend at the time.
Waterbury police reopened the cold case last year after McDermott contacted them with questions. He was five years old when his mother, Diane McDermott, was shot in February 1967. It was originally ruled an accident.
Police told the Republican-American newspaper that they found enough evidence to file murder charges against John Sponza, but Sponza was shot to death in 1972 and his body found in the trunk of a car.
Sponza had ties to organized crime, police said.
Dylan McDermott, who won a Golden Globe in 1999 for his role on “The Practice,” declined to comment to the newspaper about the investigation. But he did post on Twitter.
“I'd like to thank everyone for their amazing support today,” the actor tweeted Monday. “It means so much to me. It's been a long, hard journey that ended in victory.”
