‘American Idiot’ joins list of biggest rock-musical hits

"American Idiot," which plays at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts from May 29 through June 3, came about because theater director Michael Mayer fell in love with the Bay Area group's 2003 album of the same name and envisioned dramatic possibilities for its songs.
