Disneyland's Stars Tours reboot draws a crowd

Disneyland threw open its gates early to treat contest winners to a sneak peek at the new version of Star Tours. Those who went to the galaxy far, far away were thrilled with what they saw. Video by Mark Eades, ocregister.com/video.

Star Tours fans who got the public's first glimpse of the revamped Disneyland attraction on Friday gave it solid marks. Colbee Shackleford of Cypress said the upgrades were needed. "It's more modern," said Shackleford, 25. "The other version was stuck in the '80s." Toni Reger of Irvine, who rode the original Star Tours the day it opened in 1987, was pleased with the new features. "It's 100 percent better," said Reger, 54, wearing an original Star Tours jacket and T-shirt. "The special effects and 3D make it a really wonderful ride." Approximately 2,400 people got a sneak peek of the attraction before it opens to the general public on June 3 after winning tickets in a contest run by Disney on its blog; 1,200 people were given two tickets each. Star Tours' upgrades include the 3D technology with 54 different experiences based on the six "Star Wars" movies and appearances from different popular characters, including Princess Leia, Chewbacca and Darth Vader. Star Tours originally featured one filmed experience that riders watched while on a motion simulator that gives the feeling of being on a ship flying through space. The ride closed in July for construction. Contest winners were allowed to line up outside Disneyland as early as 3 a.m., but several arrived earlier. The first person in line, Ramon Castro, arrived outside Disneyland's gates at 2:45 a.m. Castro, 31, and his daughter drove from Escondido and spent the night in a hotel. "It's all about being the first one," Castro said. Miki Przyk of Covina was the only one to fully dress in character. Przyk made her own costume – an Ewok from "Return of the Jedi" – complete with fur skirt, boots and headgear. "I felt the motion was better," said Pryzk, 24. "The movement was smoother, and it made you fee like you were really on a spaceship." Video by Mark Eades, ocregister.com/video.
