If you live in the Anaheim Colony and heard cannon and small-arms fire Saturday, you are not being attacked.
It's just St. Catherine Academy hosting the 13th Annual Civil War Educational Weekend, a Civil War re-enactment which is playing out on their athletic field. The battle being depicted is the New Market Skirmish, which took place in Shenandoah County, Va. It was a victory for the South.
t. Catherine Academy was founded in 1889 by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, is an independent Catholic school with a military tradition for boys in kindergarten through 8th grade.
"I've always been fascinated by history," said Paul Lewanski a chemistry teacher from Tustin and a 2nd lieutenant re-enactor with the 1st N.C. Calvary. "I do it for the love of it. Teaching history like this is its purist form."
Professional Civil War re-enactors come from all over Southern California to participate in this annual event where students experience the living history of the New Market Skirmish, a battle that involved children cadets of the VMI (Virginia Military Institute).
"They were kids, just like us," added Lance Cpl. Will Maduekwe, 13, of Murrieta, who is experiencing the re-enactment for the first time.
